The Wall Street Journal hosted a meeting of the innovation industry’s two big pioneers on Wednesday night, when Steve Jobs of Apple and Bill Gates of Microsoft shared the stage in Carlsbad, Calif. The event was part of D: All Things Digital, which was hosted by the Journal’s veteran tech reporters Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher, and featured on a terrific WordPress-driven site that has some swell design touches.
The two tech giants, looking a bit different than in the 1991 Fortune cover above, talked about how they have both shaped what we all do with computers in ways that were quite poignant and flattering. Considering the longtime rivalry between the one-time collaborators (we have all seen those great “Get a Mac” ads that bear, ahem, some resemblance to Jobs and Gates themselves), the night was nicely nostalgic, a real reminder of the revolution they helped start.
Seeing Jobs and Gates reminisce made you remember how this fundamental change in the way we all exchange and design information was shaped by a vision that took shape in the not-so-distant past, and how these guys continue to figure out the future. Now, we’ll get out of the way and let you watch the rare appearance for yourselves.
