SND Boston Speaker Q/A V. 1:Nick Masuda, Lewiston Sun Journal

It’s never too early to get registered for the SND Boston workshop taking place Oct. 11-13 at the Boston Park Plaza Tower and Hotel. It’ll be here before you know it, and The Blog can’t wait to get back to Beantown for the incredible workshop that will happen there.

To get into the spirit of things, we’ll meet one of the speakers at the workshop. SND Region 4 Director Matt Erickson sat down with Nick Masuda of the Sun Journal in Lewiston, Maine, to talk about his life in and out of the biz.

Nick will be part of a panel in Boston focusing on big design at smaller newspapers. You can read the full Q&A with Nick over at the SND Region 4 Blog. Here at Update, we’ll give you some of the highlights.

So without further ado … here’s Nick Masuda!

Vital Stats
Title: Managing Editor of Visuals & Sports.
Family: Wife, Danielle (married almost four years); son Patrick (2 years old); grandparents Ron and Fran.

Workin’ For a Livin’
What inspires you creatively?: My staff. It’s important to look to your coworkers for inspiration. It creates an environment of collaboration and creative critique. And, of course, newspagedesigner.com.
When did you know you wanted to be a visual journalist?: When I decided I wanted to have a family. Life on the road as a baseball beat writer can tear a family apart. Also, growing up reading the San Jose Mercury News primed me to great visual journalism. It was almost second nature. Plus, I have a short attention span and I know I am not alone. Visuals keep me interested and creating them is half the fun.
What papers do you look at for inspiration?: The Virginian-Pilot (talk about brilliant, reader-oriented design) … the San Jose Mercury News … The Bakersfield Californian (yes, really) … the Orlando SentinelThe New York Times’ graphics department … and USA Today (for their content-driven design).

Gettin’ Personal
What’s your favorite journalism-related movie?: “Anchorman.” Ron Burgundy rocks!
Who’s going to play you in a newspaper movie based on your career?: Brad Garrett, a giant with a smartass opinion on everything.
What’s kickin’ around in your iPod or iTunes lately? Name some of your current greatest hits: Chris Daughtry‘s “Going Home” … Anything Mat Kearney or Gwen Stefani … That new summer joint by Justin Timberlake.

Again, be sure to hit up the Region 4 Blog and get the full scoop on Mr. Masuda! And as always, check in with the Update Blog daily — we’ll have more SND Boston Q&As in the coming weeks!
